Shop at Costco? You’ll Want 1 of These 4 BEST GUN SAFES in 2024

Costco has long been a fantastic place to purchase a gun safe, mainly because it has partnered with long-standing manufacturers of gun safes rather than importing them from China on their own. That means you’ll only find brands like Bighorn (owned by Rhino Metals), Cannon (which has been making safes for decades), and GunVault (owned by the parent company of Cannon).

However, keeping track of their safes can be a pain, as they regularly swap out safe models to see what is most popular rather than stick to a particular safe for long periods. So, as of this writing, these are the safes they offer that I recommend.

1. Bighorn SafeX BX5936

Bighorn used to be the imported brand sold directly by Rhino Metals. However, once Costco took over the name-brand, they offered a wide range of safes, including safes made right here in the USA at Rhino Metal’s facility in Idaho. However, at the time of this writing, Costco is not currently retailing any USA-made versions of the Bighorn Safes, leaving the MX5936 as my top choice for a safe from Costco.

Bighorn Safes offers an awesome value for the dollar, and with the BX5936 sitting south of $1000, it’s well worth it. This safe, in particular, offers an entry-level 30-minute fire rating, LED interior lighting, and interior outlets. The lock itself is a name-brand SecuRAM electronic lock (which is a great lock) and has a capacity of 49 long guns (keep in mind, you likely will only fit half that with attachments and utilizing shelving).

If you like the Bighorn but prefer to shop somewhere other than Costco, look at the Kodiak KB5933ECX, which is the same safe but with Rhino’s new import brand (linked above).

2. Cannon CS5936

Cannon has been making safes since 1965. While this aged brand has been around for quite a few years, it has also gone through quite a few iterations. The current iteration of Cannon revolves heavily around budget-minded gun safes imported into the USA from China. 

While that may be a downside for many, it’s a fact of the brand. That said, these safes are quite decent for the price, so if you have a smaller budget, they are still well worth their price. This CS5936 is the middle ground for what Costco offers, and the 36″ width is generally the best all-around size for most people.

The CS5936 comes with a 60-minute fire rating (double that of the Bighorn above), an interior door panel, and an unstated steel gauge (I’m going to bet it 14 gauge).

The major downside to this safe is its off-brand locking mechanism. I highly recommend purchasing only a safe with a name-brand lock on it, so that is my major red flag.

3. Cannon Landmark CS5950

Some people need lots of storage, and that is where the Landmark CS5950 comes into play. It carries most of the features from the rest of the lineup (except it has a 75-minute fire rating) but makes it massive.

This safe is rated for 80 firearms (which likely will end up being around 40) and offers a better lock than the other Cannon above (it’s a SecuRAM). For its price, of being well under $2000, this safe is an excellent large-capacity gun safe for the money.

4. GunVault MicroVault

Costco, unfortunately, does not have many pistol safes available for purchase. At the same time, they used to offer Vaultek (which you can find some of my favorites here), but they no longer have that brand in-store (or online), so this MicroVault by GunVault will be your best and only bet.

I’m not a fan of GunVault products, as they lack quality. However, this should function for most people for short periods. This electronic lock-style pistol safe offers a way to tether it to larger objects and gives you a backup key, just in case anything goes wrong with the e-lock.

Does Costco sell Liberty gun safes?

Costco does not sell Liberty gun safes. While it is possible that you could see Liberty pistol safes down the road (unlikely, though), you will more than likely never see their full-size safe options on Costco’s sales floor.

Liberty is a well-known brand for its high quality, excellent warranty, and making of some of the best safes in America. This image is essential for them to maintain, and big box retailers like Costco, Walmart, and others must be on brand for them.

Should you buy a gun safe at Costco?

With the current lineup of gun safes from Costco, I have no problem recommending you buy a gun safe from Costco! Their major brand Bighorn is an awesome value and was built by one of my favorite gun safe companies, Rhino Metals. Costco safes offer a wide array of options from expensive, USA-made gun safes, all the way to small, lower-end import safes.

Of course, no matter what you buy, you should be fully aware of what you are purchasing, don’t buy into the marketing hype, and keep an eye out for safes that may not be what they seem to be.

Conclusion

Costco is a great place to start if you are looking for a gun safe. With its assortment of Bighorn-branded safes (and Cannon or Vaultek), you can easily find something that fits your budget and storage needs. Keep an eye out for name-brand locks (S&G and La Gard), as the non-name-brand options may need to be updated.
