If you own a gun safe, it’s important to keep your firearms in good condition. One way to do this is by using a dehumidifier. In this blog post, we will discuss the top seven gun safe dehumidifiers on the market. These dehumidifiers are designed to protect your guns from rust and corrosion. So, if you’re looking for a way to keep your guns in good condition, be sure to check out our list!

1. Browning Flexible Dehumidifier

Best Overall Dehumidifier

TypePlug-In Dehumidifier
DimensionsUnknown
Safe ApplicationFull-Size Safe

Keeping unnecessary items off the floor of your gun safe, so that you have more space for important things like your firearms and valuables is important.

That is why this Browning Flexible Dehumidifier is my overall favorite dehumidifier! It is very similar to a standard rod-style dehumidifier but can attach itself to the walls of your gun safe, and even around corners, so that it doesn’t take up a single square inch of your safes floor, like many other types on the market.

Much like other rod dehumidifiers, this unit heats up slightly so that condensation doesn’t build up on firearms, causing corrosion. You can easily tell if the unit is working with an included LED light.

2. Goldenrod Dehumidifier Rod

Best Dehumidifier Rod

TypePlug-In Rod Dehumidifier
Length12″
Safe ApplicationFull-Size (100 cubic feet)

The GoldenRod dehumidifier is the most iconic dehumidifier on the market today and has been the go-to for many people for years. While it may take up floor space in your safe (unlike the Browning above), it is still one of the best and tried-and-true units.

This made-in-the-USA dehumidifier is 12″ long, and can handle a safe that has an interior of up to 100 cubic feet. You can of course upgrade to larger versions (18″, 24″, and 36″) if you have a larger safe than that.

It’s unique styling (the gold color) is also awesome and should look great in your safe.

It utilizes a standard AC plug, which can be installed with, or without an electrical outlet inside of your safe (however an outlet on the exterior of the safe will be needed).

3. Eva-dry E-333

Best Rechargeable Dehumidifier

TypeRechargeable Silica Gel
Dimensions2.88″ High by 9″ Wide by 8.25″ Deep
Safe ApplicationFull-Size

The Eva-dry E-333 dehumidifier is a small and rechargeable dehumidifier that can be used in gun safes. It uses silica gel technology to absorb moisture and it requires no electricity or batteries to operate, so you don’t have to worry about the power going out when you need your dehumidifier the most.

It is a bit of a larger dehumidifier, measuring 2.88″ High by 9″ Wide by 8.25″ Deep. It also has an indicator that lets you know when it needs to be recharged (every four weeks) with an AC plug. Overall, the Eva-dry E-333 dehumidifier is a great choice for those looking for a simple and rechargeable dehumidifier.

The biggest upside to this dehumidifier is that it is an effective way to keep moisture from settling when you don’t have an outlet nearby to your gun safe.

4. Snapsafe Rod Dehumidifier

Best Budget Dehumidifier Rod

TypePlug-In Rod Dehumidifier
Dimensions12″ Long by .98″ High
Safe ApplicationFull-Size

If you are just hoping to get going with your gun safe, and want to stick to a budget, this dehumidifier rod might be for you. Snapsafe has been around for quite a long time now, and they have been cranking out some awesome budget gun safe accessories, with this rod being included.

While this one may be the 12″ version (rated up to 100 cubic feet), it is also offered in both 18″ (up to 200 cubic feet) and 24″ (up to 300 cubic feet) for those with larger safes.

Outside of being a great dehumidifier rod, it does its job, and it does it well! The major downside, is the same as all dehumidifier rods, in that it does take up floor space within your gun safe.

5. SnapSafe Reusable Canister Dehumidifier

Best Canister Dehumidifier

TypeCanister Desiccant
Dimensions4″ High by 5″ Wide
Safe ApplicationFull-Size

If you are on the hunt for a dehumidifier that you can use with no power, and that you can use for a lifetime, these reusable canister dehumidifiers from SnapSafe are an awesome option. The desiccant on the inside of the canister brings in moisture, and once it is saturated, an indicator lets you know that it needs to be recharged.

However, don’t be fooled, recharging doesn’t mean you need to plug it in. Instead, you just place it in the oven at 375 degrees for two hours (which removes the moisture from the canister), and then you are ready to use it again.

These are excellent dehumidifiers for people that don’t have electricity nearby to their safe or don’t want something that heats up on the inside of their locked safe.

6. Afloia Portable Dehumidifier

Best High-Tech Solution

TypeRechargeable Silica Bead Dehumidifier
Dimensions7.48″ High by 2.56″ Wide
Safe ApplicationFull-Size

This is a newcomer to the gun safe dehumidifier world, and I kinda like it. Its portable design easily allows you to move it around your home, or even better, from your gun safe to the charging base.

Much like others on this list, it pulls moisture from the air of your safe via silica gel beads and then stores it. Once it has pulled enough moisture from the air, it will let you know via a window at the top of the unit that turns black, and after charging for 2 hours on its included base, the beads turn orange and are ready for use again.

While it isn’t that different from the more traditional styles like the Snapsafe or Eva-Dry above, it does it in a more novel way, that looks considerably better than the competition. It is also nice to know that it has a charging base, rather than having to heat the whole thing in an oven.

Do you have to have a dehumidifier in your gun safe?

No matter what climate or area you live in, you should always have a dehumidifier of some sort in your gun safe. A dehumidifier helps keep the moisture levels low and prevents rust from forming on your guns.

Even in the dryest climates, you will find moisture in the air, and once it is placed in a gun safe with little to no airflow, you will quickly find that moisture settling down and causing rust on your firearms, and mold on your paperwork.

The dehumidifiers listed above are some of the best on the market and will help you keep your gun safe and free from moisture, rust, and mold.

How do gun safe dehumidifiers work?

There are two different styles of gun safe dehumidifiers on the market right now, the dehumidifier rod and the desiccant. While each of these shows up in different forms, it only comes down to these two styles that are implemented in different ways. So let’s go through how each works!

1. Dehumidifier Rods

Dehumidifier rods work by having a wire coil that generates just a little bit of heat, this heat raises the temperature of the interior of the gun safe to the point that moisture never has a chance to dissipate and settle on your valuables, paperwork, or firearms.

Pros

  • No maintenance is required for usage. Just set it and forget it.

Cons

  • You have power in your gun safe at all times.
  • Can’t be used if you don’t have power nearby.

2. Desiccant dehumidifier

Desiccant dehumidifiers work by having a small basket or canister filled with an absorbent material, usually silica gel beads or dehumidifying crystals. These dehumidifiers absorb water from the air, and then they have to be recharged or replaced every few months, depending on the humidity level in your gun safe.

Pros

  • No electricity is needed to operate.
  • Most desiccant dehumidifiers are reusable.

Cons

  • You have to recharge these dehumidifiers, whether it be by plugging it in, or placing them in an oven.

Is a desiccant dehumidifier or a dehumidifier rod better in a gun safe?

Both methods are highly effective in reducing humidity levels and preventing unwanted condensation in the safe. However, dehumidifier rods are generally recommended over desiccant packs, as you don’t have to plan out recharging your dehumidifier in your gun safe (not something anyone thinks about daily).

However, if you are willing to put in the work, a desiccant does carry less risk as it does not have to be plugged in, which requires power and heat to be in your safe.

Ultimately, choosing between these two desiccant options will depend on a variety of factors related to your specific needs and preferences. But whichever option you choose, it is crucial to keep humidity at an appropriate level to protect your firearms from moisture-related damage.

Can you use DampRid in a gun safe?

DampRid is a popular product for protecting and preserving a variety of items, including firearms. Because DampRid absorbs moisture to prevent mold and mildew, it is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to safely store guns in a gun safe.

The antimicrobial protection of DampRid also helps to keep your guns protected from harmful bacteria and other contaminants that can come from moisture. So if you are looking for a way to use DampRid in your gun safe, the answer is yes – DampRid is an excellent choice for keeping guns protected and free from unwanted moisture.

Conclusion

A gun safe dehumidifier is an essential tool for anyone who wants to keep their firearms dry and rust-free. Whether you opt for dehumidifier rods or desiccant dehumidifiers, you will find that there are options to meet your needs. So if you want to keep your guns rust-free, consider investing in a dehumidifier to protect them.
