Top 6 Best Quality Tactical Gun Safes in 2023

We may get commissions for purchases made through links in this post. Thanks for the support! 👍

With shorter, stockier firearms becoming increasingly popular, gun safe manufacturers are following suit by creating fantastic options for those with these firearms. In this article, I will run you through my favorite gun safes for these firearms and hopefully make the best choice for your needs.

Why listen to me? I have been writing about, talking about, and helping people purchase a gun safe for years. I have spoken directly with founders, CEOs, and more to determine what makes their products stand out. This, combined with hands-on experience, I have a very specialized gun safe expertise that I am using to help you find the right safe for you.

The Agile Model 52 is hands down one of the best tactical safes on the market! Its lightweight and small stature are as much an upside as a downside. If you make sure to bolt this safe down, it is an excellent option for decentralizing (if you purchase multiple of them).

This safe only has 14 gauge steel, but it makes up for its fantastic interior (fully modular CradleGrid technology) and a tear-down build (you can build it wherever you want).

Don’t mistake this one for a cheap gun cabinet, as this is much more than that. SecureIt Gun Storage has a background in working with the military to build out their gun storage, and they are using that experience to help the residential market.

Pairing a Model 52 with a Model 40 stacked on top can give you impressive capacity (and controlled access).

Best USA-Made
2. Browning Armored US49
  • Lock: Electronic Lock
  • Dimensions: 60" High by 43" Wide by 25" Deep
  • Fire Rating: 100 mins at 1680 degrees
  • Steel Gauge: 11 gauge
  • Weight: 910 pounds
  • USA-Made
  • High gauge steel
  • Fantastic fire rating
  • Axis Interior included
  • Very expensive
  • Incredibly heavy

This Browning safe is the opposite of the Agile Model 52 above. This is a USA-Made, heavy-duty, thick steel, fantastic fire-rated gun safe from one of the biggest names in the industry. It is built specifically for tactical firearms, and its Axis Interior is fully modular (and you can purchase additional shelves and other storage components).

These features are combined with some cool styling (the new putty color is excellent) and additional shelving on the exterior top of the safe so you can put gear you don’t have to have secured on top.

This is if you want a tactical safe with USA-made quality and impressive security features.

Quickest Access

  • Weight: 399 pounds
  • Quick Access
  • Good steel gauge

This brand dominates the tactical gun safe industry! They looked at the import gun safe scene and realized something was wrong. These safes were too heavy, and their deep interiors made accessing the firearms in the back challenging.

This is the “Answer” to that issue. This fully-welded safe from SecureIt is a double-door safe with a depth of only 18″ (instead of the competitor’s 30″+). This lower depth and the CradleGrid interior allow for a custom build where everything is easily accessible (aided by the double-door build).

The only sacrifice you have for these features and its light build is the loss of a fire rating. However, the company would argue that its competitors don’t have a genuine fire rating.

Best Smart Tactical Safe
4. Vaultek RS Series RS500i Plus Edition
  • Lock: Biometric, Keypad, Key, Phone Access
  • Dimensions: 54" High by 14" Wide by 11.7" Deep
  • Fire Rating: None
  • Steel Gauge: 14 gauge
  • Weight: 93 pounds
  • Many lock options to choose from
  • Built-in tamper alerts and hygrometer
  • Customizable interior
  • Thinner steel
  • Extremely expensive for its size

If you liked the modular interior of some of the excellent safes above but wished they had more technology and features built into them, this RS500i will be the best option for you.

Vaultek is a newer company, but they have been pumping out some fantastic, high-quality safes. Their central theme is technology, and this full-size safe of theirs is an excellent example of it.

You can access the safe via an electronic keypad, a backup key, biometrics (fingerprint) via your phone, and even a dedicated button you can purchase separately.

Best Import Full-Size Safe
5. Browning MP Blackout MP49
  • Lock: Electronic Lock
  • Dimensions: 58" High by 41" Wide by 24" Deep
  • Fire Rating: 60 mins at 1400 degrees
  • Steel Gauge: 12 gauge
  • Weight: 630 pounds
  • Great capacity for the price
  • Higher steel gauge
  • Tactical design
  • Great, adjustable interior
  • Imported

Browning’s Blackout series of safes (the MP49 being my favorite) is the import safe version of the Armored series we discussed earlier in this article. While it does away with the rack on the top of the safe, it still maintains its more military-style exterior with the American flag imprinted on the face of the door.

Being an import Browning, it still has a fantastic (yet a bit more limited) interior than its domestic brother and has 12 gauge steel (like the Sporter Series) and an excellent fire rating. If you are on a budget, want a tactical safe, and something from Browning, this option is perfect.

Best Budget USA Tactical Safe
6. Liberty Tactical 24
  • Lock: Electronic or Mechanical Lock
  • Dimensions: 59.5" High by 28.25" Wide by 20" Deep
  • Fire Rating: 40 mins at 1200 degrees
  • Steel Gauge: 14 gauge
  • Weight: 387 pounds
  • USA-Made
  • Tactical build
  • Only 14 gauge steel
  • Lower fire rating

No great list of safes is complete without a Liberty safe somewhere on it, and this one is no different. The Tactical 24 from Liberty looks the part. Still, the interior includes shelving to push shorter firearms upwards for easy access while allowing additional storage lower down in the safe.

It also features a door panel with a molle setup so you can add molle accessories you already own onto the door for easy access.

Outside of those tactical-style features, this safe is USA-made, has a good fire rating, and is high quality. It also continues to be backed up with one of the best warranties and brands on the market today.

While I may not consider the price of this safe as a fantastic value, it is a reasonable deal for a great safe.

What should you look for in a tactical gun safe?

While I have an extensive buyer’s guide at the bottom of this article to help you search for an excellent safe, there are a few things you should consider with tactical-specific safes.

1. Quick Access

The first and foremost thing you should be looking at is how quick of access a tactical safe is. The safes on this list do this in various ways; however, they all aim to make it so you can get to the firearm quickly (including the locking mechanism). The Model 52 at the top of this list will be your best bet.

2. Shorter firearm storage

Shorter and longer firearms are stored differently. You don’t want to mix the two, as you will quickly find scopes getting damaged or the shorter firearms getting lost behind the others. Tactical gun safes offer better storage for these types of rifles.

For example, the CradleGrid technology found in SecureIt products makes it so every gun is in a single-file line, and there isn’t any guesswork for quickly getting to your shorter firearms.

3. Bins and storage

Shorter firearms come with the need for plenty of accessories. Browning gives you excellent door storage, Liberty brings molle to the door, and SecureIt gives you some awesome bins and pegs you can place anywhere in the interior. Regardless, make sure you have great storage for all of your accessories.

While there are only a few suitable tactical gun safes on the market (outside of the ones that are just marketing hype), these are by far my favorite options out there right now. I hope that it helped you out on your journey to find the right tactical gun safe.
