Needing to tow 10,000 pounds with a pickup truck is not the most common need for most pickup drivers! Let’s be honest most trucks never actually end up towing nowadays. However for those that do need to tow that weight there are plenty of pickup trucks that can tow this amount and be just fine.
So what trucks can tow 10,000 pounds? Major brands like Ford with the F-150 and larger, the Chevrolet Silverado with their 1500 and above, and even the Nissan Titan can tow 10,000 pounds or more. These more standard pickups have grown a lot over the years, as older version of these trucks were not nearly as capable as they are today.
Let’s dig in a little bit more about each of these trucks, and see if I can help you narrow down to the truck that you personally would want. It should also be noted, this list is ordered in alphabetical order for fairness, however I will give my opinion on the best at the end.
|2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500||6.2 Liter||13,300 Pounds|
|2022 Ram 1500||5.7 Liter||12,750 pounds|
|2022 Ford F-150||3.5 Liter Ecoboost||14,000 pounds|
|2022 GMC Sierra 1500||6.2 Liter||13,000 pounds|
|2022 Nissan Titan XD||5.6 Liter||11,040 pounds|
|2022 Toyota Tundra||3.4 Liter||12,000 pounds|
1. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (HD 2500, HD 3500)
While smaller optioned engines on the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 may not be able to tow the full 10,000 pounds, if you opt for a larger powerplant such as the 5.3 liter, and the 6.2 liter, you should have no problem towing these larger trailers.
Alternatively, you can now, as of 2022 purchase the 3.0 liter diesel engine which can tow 13,300 pounds! Last year this engine could only tow up to 9,500, so this is a huge improvement.
If you want something a bit bigger than the 1500 series, the HD 2500, HD 3500 and larger all should have no problem at all handling this larger tow!
There are other huge towing benefits to GM products of this modern generation as well. Super cruise, which is GMs enhanced cruise control, will now even work while towing!
It also offers up to 15 cameras around the truck (and even trailer) to allow for easy backing up of the truck, and to see behind you. This includes a mode that essentially turns your trailer invisible.
- Great exterior design
- Larger V8 engines can handle 10,000 pounds
- Chevrolet is generally reliable
- Super Cruise works with towing
- Many available cameras for towing
- Not all available engines can handle 10,000 pounds
- Interior is lacking in comparison to competitors
2. 2022 Ram 1500 (2500, 3500)
Ram has been making huge strides with their pickups with their newest generation. Their interiors have gotten better than the rest of the competition, their styling has improved considerably, and they are now more capable than ever.
The only engine in the 1500 series of pickups that can handle the 10,000 pound rating would be the 5.7 Liter V8 engine that they offer! This is an awesome engine that has proven to be reliable and capable (I have one in my truck).
That said, none of the other engines in RAM’s lineup can quite get over the required rating. Meaning the 3.6 Liter, the 3.0 Liter and even the 6.2 Liter (in the setups they have available) can quite get to that point.
This doesn’t mean they aren’t capable vehicles, but they just can’t quite tow that 10,000 pounds.
Now, of course their 2500, and 3500 series trucks can all handle what you need without an issue, as that is what they are intended for.
RAM products do offer blind spot monitoring, 360 degree camera for the trailer, and the ability to back up a trailer with a dial and the rear view camera. All very cool features that make the RAM pickups a capable choice! They also have the extremely cool RAM Box in the fenders for storage.
- 5.7 Liter Hemi is very capable, reaching over 12,000 pounds of towing capacity
- Ram pickups have great interiors that are comfortable
- Cool camera features for towing
- No engines other than the 5.7 can tow 10,000 pounds
3. 2022 Ford F-Series F-150 (F-250, F-350, etc)
The F-Series and more specifically the F-150 of pickup trucks from Ford are not only the most sold pickup, but are the most sold vehicle in the USA right now. These trucks are reliable, capable, and a great all-around pickup.
This is also the only pickup on this list, where the majority of engine options can handle over 10,000 pounds! The only engine that can’t is the 3.3 Liter that can only handle 8,200 pounds.
On the other hand, the 2.7 Liter, 3.5 Liter Ecoboost, 3.5 Liter Powerboost, 5.0 Coyote, and the 3.0 Liter Diesel can all handle over, if not well over the 10,000 pound rating we are hoping to achieve here.
If you are looking for a truck where you can pick and choose what type engine you want, and want to tow 10,000 pounds.
This is probably where you should stop looking.
Just like the rest of the trucks on this list, the F-250 and F-350 should be able to handle over this needed rating no problem!
The F-Series trucks also come with some cool towing features such as Pro Trailer Backup Assist Systems and Trailer Reverse Guidance. It also is capable of having an 8 foot bed!
- Many engine options to choose from
- Trailer backup assistance
- High quality interior and exterior
- Very capable truck
- Wish there were some cooler towing features
4. 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 (HD 2500, HD 3500)
So far on this list, the GMC Sierra 1500 is one of the least capable vehicles, as only the 6.2 Liter and the 5.3 Liter V8 is able to handle over 10,000 pounds and that is only with very specific options chosen, as not all of the trims levels and options available are able to handle it.
The 1500 series of the GMC Sierra does tend to be used more as a transportation vehicle, rather than a work vehicle (leaving that to the Silverado) so it isn’t surprising that the GMC Sierra 1500 has the lower towing capacity, as they likely spent more time on ride quality, rather than stiffening the ride.
That said, it does have all the same cool towing features that the Silverado has, including Super Cruise and the many camera functions!
It also has the very cool Multi-Pro tailgate that gives plenty of functionality! Just make sure to not lower it during towing, as it can damage the tailgate.
If you want an extremely capable tow vehicle, but want a GMC, I would recommend looking at their HD 2500, or HD 3500, as both of these should have no problem towing over 10,000 pounds.
- Very high end truck
- Cool multi-pro tailgate
- Interior is high quality
- Exterior recently updated
- Have to get very specific options to tow over 10,000 pounds
5. 2022 Nissan Titan XD
The Nissan Titan used to be a truck that offered best in class towing, however over the year many of the competitors have quickly surpassed the Titan as the best in towing. That said, only the Nissan Titan XD is able to tow over 10,000 pounds with no other trim levels being able to handle this bar.
The Titan really is a great truck though, and gives people an awesome option if you are not wanting to go the direction of buying a Ford, Chevy, GMC or RAM!
With the XD package and the 5.6 Liter engine, the truck can tow up to 11,040 pounds, which is nothing to scoff at.
Nissan trucks are also well know for being highly reliable, and a great all around product!
The Nissan Titan does also lag behind a bit on technology, only offering basic controls for towing!
- Great alternative to other trucks on this list
- Good reliability
- Larger truck
- Only very specific XD package can tow over 10,000 pounds
6. 2022 Toyota Tundra
This completely redesigned Tundra is truly awesome. The last generation went from 2007 until 2021 making for a hugely successful generation, yet slightly dated by the end.
However with this new truck, it is the one to beat!
We are still just now getting information leaking out about the different capabilities of these trucks, however they have already let us know to expect a towing capacity of over 12,000 pounds making it one of the best towing vehicles on the market today.
This truck will also be equipped with many different towing features that the other modern trucks have, such as being able to back up the trailer for you with minimal input from yourself.
Hopefully once launched, this truck will be a force to reckoned with!
The last generation could make 1 million miles, and hopefully this one will as well.
- Huge towing capacity at over 12,000 pounds
- Very cool redesign
- Towing features back up truck for you
- Not much information on truck quite yet
Which pickup from this list would I buy?
Pickup trucks today are incredibly efficient, with many of them even being able to get up to 30mpg on the road! However when it comes to being a well rounded truck in the way of interior, exterior, and towing, I would hands down choose the 2022 Ford F-150.
You just can’t pass up a truck that has proven to be one of the best for years, and a platform that has just been enhanced every year it comes out.
Personally, I would go for the Raptor but as for this list, it is only able to tow 8,200 pounds due to its suspension setup.
Why would you want to tow 10,000 pounds?
The need to tow 10,000 pounds with a pickup truck may not be a common thing for most people! However for those who need it, they really need it.
When you are towing for a construction site, towing horses and cattle around, or just have a huge boat, having a tow rating that can handle this range is important!
Now, most trucks that leave the factory will likely never see 10,000 pounds on the back of their hitch, however it is just nice to know it could if you want it to.
Why are these large trucks able to tow 10,000 pounds?
There is a wide variety of reasons why pickups are becoming more capable (for example the 2005 F150 could max handle 9500 pounds), and this is a result of not only suspension work, but also engine output and strengthening the transmission.
While most people think that the engine is the main reason a truck can’t tow, there is a lot more to it!
For example, if you over load the rear suspension of a pickup truck, it can actually fishtail and cause accidents.
If you don’t have a strong enough transmission, the weight of the trailer can cause it to burn up and need to be replaced.
Frequently Asked Questions
You might be surprised to hear that many of the big name manufacturers offer pickup trucks that can tow over 30,000 pounds. The Ford F-350, RAM 3500, and the Silverado 3500HD can all tow over this limit if property equipped.
There are quite a few things that weigh over 10,000 pounds that need to be towed. Some good examples are larger campers, horse trailers, construction trailers, and many other things like this.
Having the right truck for your needs is so important! If you find down the road that you have an expensive truck that isn’t capable enough to tow your trailers, then you will have to sell, and re-buy a truck that can, costing you time and money.
I hope this article helped you future proof your journey to your favorite new truck! Again, I personally would get the F-150, however all of the trucks on this list are incredible vehicles that have gotten so awesome over the years.
