A representative of Lifeproof recently reached out to me to see if I was open to seeing my thoughts about a Lifeproof case! Of course I wanted to! I have been a fan of Lifeproof cases for years, and thought this would be the perfect way to try out the new WAKE case that was recently launched by the brand.

With that said, this case was sent to me free of charge to review, however I was not paid to review the case, and all opinions of the case are my own!

The WAKE case is a heavy departure from many of the cases that Lifeproof has launches over the years, while I am well versed in their waterproof cases that they still sell, and know they also offer some other heavy duty cases like the NEXT case, this one is a bit different.

This case is a thinner case, that doesn’t cover up any ports, and doesn’t offer any waterproofing capabilities.

So why does this case exist, and why should you care? Read on to hear my thoughts on why this case really is great, but does have its drawbacks.

You can’t go wrong with the WAKE case at the ocean

Summary

This lightweight, entry level case from Lifeproof is one of the best in its class. While it may be expensive, it still is a great value.

4.4

Why does the WAKE case exist?

The WAKE case is Lifeproof’s low profile, eco-friendly, entry-level case.

As you probably are aware if you have spent any time on Lifeproof’s website, everything they sell tends to be more expensive than the competitors, and the one hole they had in their lineup was for something that didn’t cost closer to that $100 price point.

That is where the WAKE case comes in! On top of this, it is advertised as being made of 85% ocean derived plastic, and can be recycled yet again after the end of its usable life.

How tough is it?

I really like the styling of the case

I honestly was a bit hesitant putting this case on my phone, as I tend to put bulkier cases on my device to make sure I don’t damage it when dropped.

However for the sake of the review, I put it on my phone!

Once that happen, I have been really (like really) impressed with its durability.

All the corners are covered, as well as the sides. It also has a lip that goes just above the screen.

This means when you drop your phone (I have multiple times with this case), the ground won’t hit the phone.

Many cases out there will cover the corners, however I do like that it has the small lip to protect the screen.

Basically if you drop your phone face down on flat ground, it will still hit the case instead of the screen. Not something many people think about when buying a case, but it is here, and really can save your screen.

Is the value there?

In a world where you can buy cases for a buck online, you have to wonder if an entry level phone case sitting close to $40 still can be a great value.

What people don’t tell you about that $1 case, is that there was a similar ratio of R&D put into that case, and is almost as bad as a phone not being in that case in the first place.

On the other hand, Lifeproof has been making rugged, waterproof, high-end cases for years (since 2009), and is just now making a lower end case. This means they are able to use all of that experience from the past 11 years to offer you a high end case for a lower price.

Sure it isn’t waterproof, but it still is an extremely good case that I have been impressed with.

Side Note: Many phones nowadays also offer water resistance of their own.

Does it look as good as it does in the pictures?

To think 85% of the plastic in this case came from the water in this picture

I really do like the way this case looks, I liked the way it looked in the pictures, and was pleasantly surprised by how it looked when it arrived.

Sure, I may have ordered the wrong color on accident… but the back of the case is really cool. It has an ocean style back that is an ode to the fact it is made of ocean plastic.

What is my favorite thing about the case?

Alright, so I have two favorite things about this case!

Firstly, I really do like the way the case looks. It definitely has a unique pattern and styling on the back that is very cool.

Secondly, I was extremely surprised at how well it protected the phone.

Obviously this is an important thing for a phone case to be good as, so that should definitely be a good thing to be impressed about.

What don’t I like about the case?

Honestly, I really like the case! I have been using it for a couple weeks and don’t really have any complaints to speak of.

The only thing is, that I don’t really trust adding a pop socket to the back.

The texture on the back that gives the ocean styling, leaves a bumpy surface, rather than a flat surface that a pop socket needs.

Pop sockets are something that I really like having on my cases, so if you are like me, make sure to keep that in mind!

Their NEXT case may be a better option for you.
