Hiking is a great way to reconnect with nature and get away from busy cities and television screens. Taking a fishing rod with you is not only a way of catching your dinner. It is also a perfect leisure activity that can help keep you occupied and present while hiking.

Whether you are hiking for the day or going on a weeklong hiking adventure, hiking with a fishing rod can either be fun, or a pain, it just depends on if you have thought ahead.

So what is the main thing you need to think about when hiking with a fishing pole? It comes down to one primary thing, size. You need to make sure your get a fishing pole that is not going to snag on too many things while hiking, while also having the least amount of bulk.

There are two different fishing rods that work great for the combination of hiking, and fishing. That would be telescopic fishing rods, and Tenkara fishing rods.

1. Telescopic Fishing Rods

A telescopic fishing rod is a good bet for backpackers and hikers. It can shrink down to only a couple of feet while not in use, but you benefit from a near-normal size rod, once extended. Pay attention to the material and build quality.

High-quality telescopic rods can do everything that a casting rod can do. However, the best telescopic fishing rods are expensive and require you to carry a reel.

2. Tenkara Fishing Rods

If you do not want to carry around a reel and would rather get back to basics, then a Tenkara fishing rod is the one for you on your next hike. All you need is the rod, line and bait.

They are small and straightforward, making them perfect for packing away. Of course, there are limitations on the size of fish and distance from the riverbank you can fish from.

However, for mountain streams and the freshwater ways you are likely to encounter during your hike, Tenkara fishing rods are more than up to the challenge.

Conclusion

If you decide that you would like to carry a fishing rod while hiking, you have plenty of options. Think about the type of fishing you are likely to be doing, whether you need a reel and how much additional weight you want to be carrying on your back.
