Taking a look at if Yeti Coolers (and Mugs) Float

Reading Time: 3 minutes //  by Austin

Yeti is a company that is well known for its high-quality coolers and tumblers. They have managed to build an astounding reputation surrounding the performance of their products that has people from all around fall in love with them.

They have become the envy at every outdoor gathering and even seen as somewhat of a status symbol among other outdoor enthusiasts. Everyone knows they will keep your water ice cold and your coffee piping hot for much longer than you would reasonably need (You can never be too prepared),

However, what is the one thing you need from a cooler you take fishing, on the boat, and anywhere near water? Floatation. So can Yeti products float? Yeti products are most all built to be able to float, making them perfect for water activities where you don’t have to worry about losing your Yeti to the depths of the pond or lake.

Why Do They Float?

The Yeti coolers will float almost every time. No matter how bogged down with ice and drinks, the container itself is designed to stay afloat. They are manufactured with lightweight plastic and insulation, giving them excellent buoyancy to keep them from sinking. The inner parts of the walls hold a sustained amount of trapped air pockets.

This acts in the same fashion as a life jacket, keeping the container from going under. All of these things factor in together to keep the container from going under, even when it is full.

The only way to make it sink is to fill it with heavy, bulky items like rocks to add enough weight. Even filling it to the brim with ice wouldn’t stop it from floating. Ice is already lighter than water and will naturally float on its own.

Not every Yeti product is guaranteed to float. The tumblers tend to sink when they are full and will turn upside down and bob on the water’s surface due to a pocket of air sealed on the inside (still better than losing them all together). The tumblers are less likely to float as they are built with a more dense metal than the coolers.

Why Is This Great?

This feature could be a potential BBQ saver. Whether you are out in the sun by the lake or on the boat cruising the ocean, there is a chance you could drop your cooler full of valuable refreshments into the water.

With a Yet, you have no need to worry as, after a few short moments, your chest will rise back to the top ready for you to fish it out.

If you have a sub-par chest that you haven’t done all the important research on, you could easily lose everything to the depths below and have to buy yourself another cooler. A tragedy such as this could ruin the day out for everyone.

Other chests made with lower quality materials and less intuitive engineering may not be built to such a high standard, even if they are cheaper. Yeti is one of the most expensive brands out there. Yet, consumers still come in flocks to buy them.

The price tag may be higher than that of their competitors, but you absolutely get what you pay for according to their reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Yetis really worth it?

From my experience, Yeti products are worth it. While they may be more expensive than what many people are used to, they are extremely high quality products that are built to last a lifetime. On top of this, the design and aesthetics are some of my favorite in the industry.

Do Yeti bag coolers float?

Yeti bags do float and you should be able to take them on the boat, to the beach or fishing with no thought of possibly losing them in the water.

Conclusion

I am personally a huge fan of Yeti, and all of the products that they sell. There really is a product for anyone, as they even sell a camping chair (albeit a very expensive camping chair).

That said, having a great feature in their coolers that allows it to float makes a huge difference, and is kind of an insurance policy for those water based activities this summer.
